Question types and their settings
Updated 21 October 2026 · 4 min read
Click Add a question and pick a type: text, details such as address or amount, choices, scales, content blocks or files. Then set its wording, help text, rules and key in the panel on the right.
The type of a question decides what your client sees (a text box, a list, a date picker, a signature pad) and how the answer is checked. Picking the right type saves you from cleaning up answers later.
Adding a question
- Open your form and stay on the Questions tab.
- Click Add a question (or Add your first question on an empty form).
- In What kind of question?, click a type.
- In the panel on the right, write the Question, and add Help text (optional) if your client might hesitate.
- Tick Required if the PDF would be wrong without this answer.
Drag a question by its handle, or use the arrows, to change the order. The copy icon duplicates it.
The types, group by group
| Group | Types |
|---|---|
| Text | Short text, Long text, Email, Phone, Number, Date, Time |
| Details | Web address, Address, Country, Amount, Calculation, Line items |
| Choice | Dropdown, Multiple choice, Checkboxes, Yes / No, Consent box |
| Scale | Rating (stars), Scale (for example 1 to 10) |
| Content | Heading, Info text |
| Files | File upload, Image upload, Signature |
A few notes on the less obvious ones:
- Multiple choice lets your client pick one option; Checkboxes let them pick several; Dropdown keeps a long list compact.
- Amount is a sum of money in EUR, GBP, CHF or USD.
- Consent box is an "I agree to…" tick box.
- Heading and Info text are not questions: they give your client a section title or an explanation.
- File upload takes a PDF, PNG or JPEG file, Image upload a PNG or JPEG photo, up to 5 MB per file. Tick Allow several files to accept up to 10.
- Signature lets your client sign with a finger or a mouse, or type their name.
- Calculation and Line items work out totals for you. They have their own article: calculations and totals.
Settings you will find
- Options, with Add option, for the choice types.
- Number of stars for a rating, Lowest value and Highest value for a scale.
- Rules (optional): Shortest answer and Longest answer for text, Smallest value and Largest value for numbers and amounts, Allowed dates for dates (for example Today or later).
- Expected format on a short text: an Irish Eircode, a UK, French, Belgian or Swiss postcode, a VAT number or an IBAN. It checks the shape of the answer, not whether it really exists.
- Your own error message (optional), shown when an answer breaks a rule.
- Key: the name of the answer in your document, such as
client_name.
Good to know
- Changing a Key later can break the document, because the PDF looks for answers by key.
- You can repeat an earlier answer in a question: use Insert an earlier answer under the question text, for example "Thanks {{first_name}}, which rooms need work?".
- The form saves itself as you work. "All changes saved" appears at the top.
- Check how each type looks to your client in the Preview tab, or read what your client sees.
